“...Because of you.” We tested whether breakups and stress actually increase drinking frequency using panel FE regression.
1️⃣ What Did We Analyze?
We dove into the Youth Panel Survey (YP) and whipped up a panel‐FE regression stew:
• 🍷 alcohol_freq: weekly drinking frequency (DV)
• 💔 breakup: recent breakup (1 = yep, they just got dumped)
• 😵 stress: self-rated stress (0–10; “don’t talk to me before coffee” level)
Think of it as mixing breakup tears and stress sweat into your Friday night pour—then seeing how often you lift that glass! 🍻
2️⃣ The Results
• Breakup coeff: 0.87 (p<0.01)
• Stress coeff: 0.32 (p<0.05)
Breakups add 0.87 more drinks per week, and higher stress drives up drinking too. Your “just one drink” hides statistical traces of heartbreak.
3️⃣ Kid-Friendly Explanation
• People who break up drink more out of sadness.
• More stress means more trips to the bar.
👉 Next time a friend reaches for another drink, ask them, “What’s really going on?”
4️⃣ Data Summary
Control group: peak at ~1–1.5 drinks/week
Post-breakup: broader distribution, many >2 drinks/week
Breakup survivors: more frequent and varied drinking—statistical proof of emotional coping patterns.
